Many Tricks ยท Open-With Manager

Open-With Manager lets you edit the list of file types a given application thinks it can open. This is most useful with regard to the Finder's "Open with" context menu; and it also affects the way applications behave when you drag files to their Dock symbols.

This is one of my favorite Mac utilities. I use Fluid to create a lot of SSBs, and I also have multiple Fusion VMs. The problem is they all like to impose upon the Finder Open With menu. No, I don't want to use my Gmail SSB to open an MP3 (though thanks for asking), and I don't want to open a Word document in Word 2010 or my XP VM.

Open-With Manager makes it very quick and easy to clean up the Open with menu. And there was much rejoicing.

Open-With Manager is free, but donations are appreciated.

Posted via web from Evans's Posterous

I've been playing with Office 2007 for work.  However, my updated contact info is in OS X!  It should be simple enough to export the contacts as vCards and import them into Outlook as contacts, right?  Well...sorta...

Address Book thinks it's pretty cool to export all the contacts as one vCard.  (It's part of the 3.0 spec, I think.)  Outlook does not like that one bit.  It wants one vCard per person, please.

Being the lazy person that I am, I knew there had to be a better way to do it.  Google turned up some great choices, but they all involved me spending money for the functionality.  I'm about as cheap as I am lazy, so I kept searching.  If only there was a way to automate the process...

Automator to the rescue! I whipped up a quick workflow to export all cards as individual vCards into a folder on the desktop called vCards.  In an effort to spread my laziness, you can download the workflow.

Here's a quick rundown of what it does:

1) Creates a folder on the Desktop called vCards.
2) Finds all contacts where the name is not "" (not null).
3) Export all cards individually.

Voila!

Of course, if you want the vCards saved elsewhere, you can change that part in Automator.  For those that want to go with the flow, there's also an Application in the ZIP file.

Enjoy!

Parallels 3.0 Out

Parallels 3.0 for Mac is out now. I must say, I like what I’ve seen. Upgrades are $49.

Dreamhost, SSL, and Mail.app (Oh my!)

Yes, I drank the Kool-Aid and switched to a Mac. Well, switch isn’t the right word. Boot camp allows me to have both.

One thing that too me awhile to get right is SSL mail from Dreamhost with both Mail.app and Thunderbird without getting error messages all the time.

A couple of things need to happen:

1) The Dreamhost SSL certificate needs to be added to the keychain.
2) A change must be made to the /etc/hosts file.
3) The E-mail apps must be configured (for new and existing accounts).

The Dreamhost wiki has it handled pretty much (for Tiger, 10.4).
